Archbishop calls for reflecting on Liberation

TEAM HERALD

PANJIM: “ Is Liberation limited to mere political self- determination and does the fact that Goans gained freedom from foreign rule in 1961 make them automatically a free and self- determined people?” asked Archbishop of Goa Filipe Neri Ferrão while speaking at the annual Christmas reception Thursday.

Archbishop Ferrão said that we in Goa are still surfriding the wave of the celebration of the Golden Jubilee of what has come to be known as the Liberation of Goa.

“… Now that the celebrations are on the wane, it is perhaps pertinent to do a little soul- searching and ask ourselves, in all sincerity-- at the end of these 50 years, are we really a liberated people?,” he stated.

Archbishop Ferrao tried explaining that person- orientation is of prime importance more than development which is limited to mere economic growth, whether through flourishing tourism or the much talked about Regional Plan. He said that development cannot consist only in the indiscriminate possession of the products of human history.

“ True development, just as true liberation, is person- oriented, it concerns and promotes the whole person in every single dimension. It is only in the service of the human person that we can talk of wholesome liberation as well as of social and economic development,” he said adding that these are his personal thoughts and not an attempt to pull up the government.
