Hi Tony,
The Goans of Zanzibar had heaps of decorations from the British (being a
Protectorate), the
Portuguese and from the Sultan. A person that quickly comes to mind is Mabel
D'souza's mom,
who was awarded an MBE. I grew up in Dar and am only the son of a Zanzibari.
There may be
a whole lot of additional honour recipients that I do not know about or cannot
remember right now.

Strangely enough, Christie De Souza was my moms relative. I bought my first new
keyboards from him,
at a discount. While working for Tellis & Co. I also had the pleasure of doing
the accounts of C.F.R. de
P. Martin. He was a Goan and the last Portuguese Councilor in Tanganyika.
Lastly, I did not know Anton Almeida had received an MBE too. As Boy Scouts we
used to go camping
at his farm across the ferry. Anton had passed away by then and his very able
and determined widow
was running the farm. Mrs. Almeida was one heck of a character. I clearly
remember arriving for one
camp where she informed us that a python had swallowed a goat two nights
before. This meant that
we were very safe. At the time she single handedly ran a dairy farm that had
over 100 cows.
