I understand there was an attempt to remove the jewels off the casket of St
Francis Xavier in the 40s/50s - having read of the episode in Memorias do meu
passaado (Fernando Noronha). The culprit, IIRC, was an Englishman, and was
caught red-handed ...
So there were issues in those times, but it appears that people were also more
vigilant and aware of one another, i.e. ensured each-others' well-being,
as opposed to today's apparent apathy ('Maka kiteak podlam, mojem kain
num tem').
Just my observations from afar.
