If anyone thinks that a BJP controlled government or Congress or any other
combination or coalition will save Goa, they are either dreaming or smoking a
narcotic substance.

The uncontrolled greed for money coupled with a distinct lack of desire on all
fronts to enforce applicable laws, will ensure that Goa will continue
spiralling southwards beating even the worst Indian standards.

A sufficient number of women (not of the ilk of the violent female politician
from Ilhas or the corrupt one from Salcette) in politics, whether in government
or the opposition would have saved the day but sadly, that does not seem an
option.

The only silver cloud that may appear, although not in the lifetime of anyone
reading this, would be the result of an intelligent and sustained effort to
raise a generation of young men and women inculcated with intense patriotism
not just of the nationalist kind but with tenets of honesty and public service.

Add to that a complete eradication of the sycophancy that is the hallmark of
present day Goan politicos and bureaucrats. This could be possible with
teaching Goan children self-esteem right from early ages and emphasizing
courage and fair play as desirable virtues, along with a good grounding of
their rights and how to ensure they are not trampled upon.

The other alternative and this could definitely happen sooner, is that with all
goan owned real estate sold, mines stripped bare, gulf jobs gone and with
beaches ruined, Goa could turn into a have-not state and Goans would be forced
to demand accountability of the crumbs that the Centre would throw their way.

There is always the possibility that the timeless gods we once meaningfully
worshipped in our temples or the Spanish-born saint we looked up to from down
the ages, will yet produce a miracle. But that would be unfair to expect, for
have they not once given us the miracle of Goa itself which we chose to turn
into mayhem?

Roland.
