RESPONSE: Reluctantly, I have to correct that K.P.R. stood for Kenya Police Reserve and not Kenya Police Regiment as stated by the interviewed person. Many that patrolled our area were part timers, worked only at night, for extra cash. These guys knocked on your door loudly and walked into your house and picked up your Kikuyu Cook. I was about knee high at the time, I remember it all. While I applaud this initiative, of the Goan Oral Histories Project; no I don't know, don't know, in spite of hearing repeatedly...you know, you know and you know....by the so far interviewed persons. >From what I have heard so far, thank you but no thank you. Yeah grapes are sour! The real bad arse guys in the Police Force in Kenya were the General Service Unit (G.S.U.) - they took no prisoners - no quarter asked none given. If they had taken over Goa, instead of the Indian Army - there would be no students sitting by the Road side! The G.S.U. was/is a Paramilitary outfit: - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Service_Unit. Ask about this Unit from our recently, or not so recently, arrived Goans from Kenya! Sadly the people with first hand information have not yet come forward. Try ex-G.I. members, ex R.G.I. and ex G.G. members - those who are still around! Everything of importance revolved around the Clubs! Also the interviewed contradicted, did not see with their own eyes but witnessed from their windows - kitem re bondalam? Either you saw/witnessed or you didn't! Fair enough? At the end of the day...this is not worth the money? The Goan Institute as a rule, did not take on tailors and the like as Members or guests - in the later years they felicated one Manolem Fernandes, who cooked for HRH Princess Elizabeth - now our Queen in 1952, I think? Perhaps one of his sons in London could be interviewed! The Goan Gym would not have any one except one of their own! R.G.I. was more user friendly - hired the Club to anyone who could pay! Butlers, cooks and the like had their own small club in Nagara called St. Santa Club. Tailors had their own Tailor's Society - small place in town. One Hindu man ran into the fields to help? A likely story!!
