You know the complaints about social media making people far more busy
with 'communicating' with distant outsiders rather than with individuals
in their immediate surroundings. It wasn't much better in the 1890s in
Germany, when the newly launched picture postcards ('Anzichten' in German)
were the craze of the day. As a contemporary wrote:

"At every stop, local trains were besieged by vendors peddling postcards
of the locality where the train had halted. People were writing postcards
on the platforms, and in the compartments passengers were sitting with
piles of postcards beneath them, which they were writing up non-stop,
paying no attention whatsoever to their company".
