Also, sardines marinated with ground chilli, salt, vinegar masala and fried may taste much better instead of soji batter. But the pictures excite the taste buds!! Sol kadhi Sol kadhi is served with a meal of rice, fish curry, fried fish and vegetables in Goa and Maharashtra, as an additive to digestion. This Kokum sol called binda sol in Konkni can be added to fish curry in place of tamarind (Amsan). For 'sol khadi' here's what you need to do •In a jug, add enough quantity of water, drop few kokum sol (dried skin) and set aside for 1 hour, it will begin to leave out red juice. •Remove the kokum sol (skin) out of the water and little ‘hing’ asafoetida to enhance the taste. •Add salt to taste and garnish with coriander leaves. •Refrigerate and serve cool with rice, fish curry, fried fish, and vegetables. Thanks for the pics. Joe. Also, I admire your memory and that you still found the tree of your childhood, that produces nuts in leaves, that are edible (previous pic.). I thought they could be the so called 'bombay tamarind' found in Pune, Belgaum etc. But doubt it. Could this be a tree sapling brought by the Portuguese in yester years? They had introduced many fruit tree saplings etc from south America etc.., Sukka Bombil Chutney (Dried Bombay duck chutney) Ingredients: 6-7 Bombil, cleaned and cut into small pieces 1 large onion chopped ¼ cup chopped coriander leaves 1 tbsp tamarind pulp or 2 tbsp tamarind juice ½ tsp turmeric powder ½ tsp red chilli powder 6-7 green chillies 2 tbsp oil for frying Salt to taste Method: Fry the bombil pieces with a little oil on medium heat for 10 minutes and keep aside. Fry the green chillies and garlic flakes for 3 minutes on low flame. Coarsely grind the bombil pieces with garlic and chillies. Fry the onion till light brown. Add rest of the ingredients and fry for another 5 minutes and cook it covered for another 10 minutes on low flame. Dried Bombil gives out strong odour during cooking. Even though Turmeric (haldi powder) and tamarind pulp help reduce the odour it is best to prepare this dish before your guests arrive. Alternatively, one can also keep Vinegar in a dish to avoid spread of odour since Vinegar absorbs odour. MD.
