-- Samir Umarye *BICHOLIM: *The Mayem Bhoo Vimochan Nagrik Kruti Samiti on Thursday petitioned the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to abolish the title of Condade de Mayem and restore the ownership to the indigenous persons of Mayem.
In a memorandum, the Samiti President Kashinath Mayekar has stated five points and has requested the chief minister to take the Samiti and its legal advisor into confidence before deciding over the issue. "The committee constituted by the government under the chairmanship of law commission to resolve the vexed issue of evacuee property in a legally sustainable manner be continued and the proceedings of the said committee be saved and given effect to," the memorandum states. The Samiti has also demanded the enectment of the proposed Condade of Mayem (abolition of title and proprietorship of lands in Mayem) Bill 2011, as early as possible, preferably during the 2012 winter session of the assembly. The memorandum also highlighted the issue that came up in the media about the proposed sale of Mayem land and has asked the chief minister to investigate the matter and to take action to declare such transaction as null and void. Copies of the memorandum have also been forwarded to the law minister, the chief secretary, Mayem MLA, law secretary and chairman of the law commission.
