Goans are charitable when giving on an individual level but charity however does not extend in a big way to general community causes . other Indian communities raise gigantic sums with large donations from a few super-rich individuals. Nevertheless, a bold step was taken in 1988 when the Goan Overseas Association of Toronto came up with the idea of a Goan Charitable Organization (GCO) to help out vulnerable members of the community . The GCO, in my opinion, keeps a rather low profile with its image and its activities. This belies the sterling work done by its volunteer committee.
