SHANTARAM NAIK ADDRESSES CONFERENCE ON AGING, MIGRATION AND URBANISATION OF POPULATION IN BANGKOK

Only solution to minimise migration of population in Asia is that respective countries have to provide job opportunities to the people in their respective areas said Mr Shantaram Naik M P while addressing delegates of Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on population development in Bangkok on Thursday.

Mr Naik who was presiding as Chairman of one of the sessions of the General assembly of Asian Parliamentarians on Population Development held on 24th and 25th October in Bangkok gave the example of Mahatma Gandhi Employment Guarantee Scheme in operation in India and said that the scheme has reduced migration of labourers in the country from one State to other, to a large extent.

The session of the General assembly was inaugurated by its Chairman Mr Yasuo Fakuda, former Prime Minister of Japan.

A delegation of Indian Association of Parliamentarians on Population Development which attended Bangkok conference consisted of Shri P J Kurien, Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha, Shantaram Naik MP, Shri Adolf Hitler Marak and Shri Andrew Simons, both MLAs from Meghalaya along with Executive Director of IAPPD.

Presiding over one of the sessions on the subject of "Ageing , Migration and Urbanisation of Population" Mr Naik said that in near future, a large section of senior citizens will be able to handle their activities like banking, shopping, payment of bills, electronically reducing the need of their physical movement.

He said that most of the countries in the world including in Asia, have legislations and schemes for senior citizens in place. Their effective implementation is the need of the hour, he said.

Mr Jerrold Huguel, renowned Population Consultant and Sai Jyothirmai Racheria, an expert in the field, presented their papers in the session.

Other prominent persons who addressed the session at various stages were besides Prof Kurien, Mr Roger Mark Souza of Population Action Mission, Mr Minar Pimple of United Nations, Mr Song Fatang M P from China, Dr Miss Attiya Inayatulla M P and former Minister from Pakistan, Senator and Vice-President of Thailand, Mrs Phonthip Lawira and delegates from 20 countries including Indonesia, Iran, New Zealand addressed the gathering.
