If the Supreme Court (God) sentences one to life in prison, friends and 
relatives
appeal with mercy petitions that result in a lesser punishment (Purgatory).
Then, if the convict behaves well and repents, he/she gets entitled to a 
Parole, 
hence set free (in Heaven) -  hypothetically speaking.
