Dear FL

When the controversy about Cipriano was at its height there was
surprisingly little reaction from people. Forget about other villages in
Moira itself there were just a handful of people prominent among whom was
Oswald Cordeiro who stood up for him. The others who came onto the scene
were seen to be using him to get cheap publicity for their political
outfits.

On another note I wonder whether the fact that Cipriano did not belong to
the right caste resulted in so little public support for him, although the
issue was something that affected every single citizen. He poor fellow
belonged to the caste of expert chefs and not Dotors and Advogads. This is
something bad. If all the Bamons and Chaddes had come out in protest; if
the Bishop's palace had given the word; if all Goans of all castes and
creeds spoke up, then things would have been much different in his case.

Now tomorrow if some big Bamon gets the big sticks that Cipriano got, why
should the others stand up for them?
