The news of a jellyfish invasion in the polluted rivers especially in the Mandovi near Panjim is bad news for Goa fish and shrimp eaters. This is an invasive species like the Asian Carp, a fish that was found in Canadian and American lakes that causes imbalance in the food chain and was probably accidentally introduced into North America by Chinese cargo ships and vessels. Invasive species live off larvae as in the case of the new kind of jellyfish found in Goa or they eat literally tons of smaller fish that are food to the bigger species, that as a result soon disappear, as caused by the Asian Carp in Canada. As if overfishing in the world due to large factory-trawlers and rising populations was not enough, we have now to endure this nature invasion. The alternative is farmed fish and shrimp, but besides poor taste, that kind comes with its own problems like added antibiotics to prevent fish disease and therefore causing havoc with human body systems.
