Elsie, this is a beautiful insight into frontier life from the Memsahib of a
Bwana Karani. There were others too who must have been through the adventures
of roughing it out with their husbands. I know from what you and Mervyn have
told me that there are many stories still locked way that I hope you will
slowly release as an important part of the Goan heritage in East Africa. I hope
it inspires other Goan folks (throughout the diaspora) whose parents are still
alive to capture similar stories and put them in writing. Hundreds of Civil
servants had over the years worked in small townships and frontier towns to
keep the administration of government functioning. Unless there is a concerted
effort at this time, all this rich history will be lost forever.
