Entry tax and threats The Goa Govt has put entry tax on vehicles from other states. It is true that many vehicles also transport goods from Goa. Those vehicles registered in Goa will not be subject to this tax. It may lead to registering of vehicles in Goa and thus raise resources for the state. The validity of this type of tax not defined, specified for a particular use ,may not stand the test of legality Of immediate concern is the availability of essential items and which in turn may lead to cost escalations and shortages. The threat to disrupt supplies will also hit the growers across the borders. The ready market in Goa is beneficial for the agricultural produce, which finds a more lucrative prices compared to their own state The agricultural Department of Goa is importing large quantities of vegetables for distribution to the fair price shops, This excessive dependence puts the users to ransom, if the threats are carried on. Even though ,interdependence is unavoidable, steps must be taken to increase production locally by incentives and other support mechanism. The paddy fields are kept fallow due to increase in labour costs and uncertainties of rains and lack of irrigation facilities It is prudent to encourage this aspect that any such threats may not have the desired impact Toll on interstate bridges, road networks is not unusual system. The vehicles owners are already subjected to annual road and other taxes Some recent steps taken by the Govt. are showing positive results as with supplies employment is also generated Hence determined steps be taken to encourage the production of all essential commodities locally Neslon Lopes Chinchinim
