It is good that the Goa Government has finally begun the process of selecting the much needed State Chief Information Commissioner and State Information Commissioner.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has to ensure that the selection process is free, fair, transparent and not vitiated by political inter meddling as was seen in the earlier attempt to high handedly appoint Pandurang Nadkarni and Pradeep Padwal. To the utter delight of officers faltering in furnishing information under the RTI Act, the functioning of the Goa State Information Commission has come to a grinding halt for over a year. The Right to Information Act is a powerful and potent tool to expose the current rampant corruption and widespread mal administration that Goa finds itself enveloped in. And in this direction an independent and effective State Information Commission is a vital mechanism that has to be in place.
