Majorda- the Bread Basket of Goa was published by O Heraldo ( May 5,2013)in which Adv. R. Gracias correctly stated that members of the Vaishya (Chardo) community were trained in the art;of making bread by Christian missionaries. However, a few days later in the same newspaper R. Gracias was ''corrected'' that it was Kshatriya (Chardo) of Majorda who became a podehr.
Not many people believe in the inanities of our rural intellectuals of the yore, who naturally placed themselves on the top of social pyramid but it is our duty to quote correctly the caste nomenclatures when the need arises. According to Manusmriti, people who carried out religious duties like chanting of mantras and performing of pooja ceremonies were known as Brahmins. Next came the rulers - the Kshatriyas like Maharajas, Rajas etc of the royal class whose duty was to govern their territories and above all to extend physical protection to their subjects. Thus Brahmins and Kshatriyas were the two superior (twice born) castes. Then came the commoners - Vaishyas ( Chardos). Traders and money lenders became Vaishyas A class(Banyas). Whereas people who tended their cattle and farmed the land were known as Vaishyas B class ( Chardos). Podehrs in any case , cannot claim to be superior to the landed class (bhatkars), themselves Vaishyas B class (Chardos)
