This is an opportunity for Goa University students and general public to learn from the masters. Course title: ONB-101: Western music in dialogue with the arts, history and philosophy Between July 10 and August 15, 2013 Number of Credits: One (15 hours). (Certification Course for other participants) Course Instructor: Professor Santiago Lusard Girelli, University of Seville and Anthony Gonsalves Visiting Professor at Goa University and musicians for Columbia, Germany etc. Course pre-requisites: No prior knowledge of music is necessary. Objective: To explore the confluence of Western music with art, sculpture, architecture, poetry, literature, theatre, religion and philosophy, and its historical and political context. Session number Code Session title Activity 1. MUS 01 Gregorian chant and early (‘ancient’) music Each session of approximately 1.5 to 2 hours duration, with each session incorporating music performances after an introductory lecture. Some performances may be in conjunction with Camerata Child's Play. 2. MUS 02 Renaissance and Baroque music 3. MUS 03 Baroque colonial music 4. MUS 04 The music of Johann Sebastian Bach 5. MUS 05 Classical music 6. MUS 06 Romantic music 7. MUS 07 Twentieth-century and contemporary music Assessment: Participants would be encouraged to delve deeper into the session subjects at home, before and after each session. Assessment will be done through written essays and interactive sessions. Number of participants: Between 50 to 100. Who can register: Any student at the Goa University is welcome to register. Participation is also invited from members of the public.
