Activist moves high court over appointment of Goa's state information commissioner
READ MORE State Information Commissioner|Social Activist Aires Rodrigues|High Court PANAJI: Social activist Aires Rodrigues moved the high court of Bombay at Goa seeking a direction to the state government to restrain it from appointing journalist SandeshPrabhudesaias state information commissioner (SIC). The matter is likely to come up before the high court on August 13, Rodrigues told TOI. Pointing out that the selection of a second SIC was without jurisdiction, Rodrigues said that Prabhudesai was selected for a non-existent post which was not advertised and it is in violation of Articles 14 and 16 of the Constitution of India as it has deprived other qualified persons an opportunity to apply for the second post of SIC. Rodrigues also submitted that the selection of Prabhudesai was done without him even applying for the post of SIC and upon a mere recommendation letter from Oscar Rebello, a letter which was surprisingly silent on Prabhudesai's educational qualifications. Rodrigues submitted that the SIC has to necessarily discharge judicial and quasi-judicial functions and that the post requires a judicial approach, legal experience, knowledge and expertise of law which Prabhudesai does not possess.
