The statement made by the senior BJP leader, Dr Wilfred Mesquita, was atrocious to say the least. At least it is gratifying to see that other members of the BJP leadership has seen some sense. The stand of the opposition, however, is valid, if the fact is that these dance bars have come up after the coming of the BJP government in power. If not, they are being hypocritical. We should also talk about the permission given by the Supreme Court to reopen the dance bars in Maharashtra, on the grounds of so many of the dancers being thrown out of employment. It would seem to me that the judges think that this is a noble occupation. Then we should also talk about those who took up the case to the Supreme Court who challenged the earlier decision of the Maharashtra government. And finally, we should not sweep under the carpet the fact that the Supreme Court judgement was applauded by so many from the civil society, including the editors of some of the major newspapers in Mumbai.
