Obituary - Walter John D'Souza – Nagoa-Bardez RIP

Walter was an active parishioner of Holy Trinity Church, Nagoa, Bardez. He was
my schoolmate at St Josephs’ Hi gh School, Arpora during Rev Fr Phillip
Mendonca's time. After finishing his school, he joined the St Xavier College,
Mapuca. He was a good sportsman and represented our school as well as St Xavier
College many times. After graduating in Science he joined the Mining Division
of Salgaokars. Most of his working life was with Salgaokars.

Walter was a social activist at an early age. Soon after Goa’s Liberation, he
strongly campaigned during Goa’s “Opinion Poll”. Also, we St Josephs' school
boys were the first to go on strike demanding half-day school instead of full
day. He was one of the contributors in our Holy Trinity Church programmes. I
used to meet him regularly after the Sunday English-Mass. Walter took active
part in the development of our village, Arpora-Nagoa and was a regular
participant during Panchayat’s Gram-Shaba.

Walter’s life was principle-based. He was a deep thinker and had his own
philosophy of life. He always stood by his principles and at times, appeared
that he was tougher than tough. We regularly used to meet at the Calangute
beach during weekends. Walter lived a content life with basic human needs right
from his school days, - humble, down to earth. Walter neither had any greed nor
any pride. He had a good sense of humour but had to provoke it to manifest. I
personally feel that. Walter’s philosophy of life was similar to Dalai Lama but
with completely different style.

On 6th September 2013 Walter passed away but his principles but his philosophy
of life and his legacy will remain. I have never seen any glimpse of greed or
pride with Walter’s words or actions or intentions. I am not sure whether
anyone has documented his principles and philosophy of life. If not, then it’s
our duty to preserve his legacy – it may be of some benefit to the future
generations to fight for social justice towards mankind by living a humble and
modest life.

May his soul Rest In Peace.
