-- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM: The tourism department, along with Goa tourism development corporation (GTDC), has taken up the task of beautifying Mayem lake and the surrounding areas.
Old jaded boats at Mayem lake will be replaced by new boats such as sea-cycle and water boats, shikaras, electric boats, besides special boats that will be introduced to cater to families alone, said a government official talking about future plans for the lake. Besides the life jackets provided for safety and the attractive buoys released to guide tourists taking a ride in the lake, the beautification work will also involve building a jetty on the banks of the lake. Chief minister Manohar Parrikar during his visit to the spot a few months ago initiated the 8 crore project. Mayem MLA and deputy speaker Anant Shet has said he will ensure that work is completed as early as possible. There is also a proposal to have a theme park at the site, besides organizing other sports activities. "Beautification work will be carried out in such a fashion that the natural environment is protected," a government official said, adding that by rejuvenating Mayem lake, employment opportunities for locals will be created. Local trader Sripad Kumbharjuvekar suggested that the government start a special bus service to Mayem lake.(ToI)
