Liberation v/s Armed Aggression: The Media's Response to Goa's Liberation by Nishtha Desai (2011) with a Foreword by Peter Ronald De Souza is published by the & Dept. of Art & Culture of the Govt. of Goa is a book that seeks to document what its title states.
Predictably the press in India were supportive of the Indian Army who liberated Goa; while the Western press castigated India for its abandonment of its policy of non-violence and of violating the sovereignty of Portugal. Peter De Souza's Foreword describes the ideological war that the Press of these opposing forces fought. One is left wondering what life in Goa would have been had the Portuguese given control to India of Goa when this was still possible. If an amicable settlement had been reached then perhaps Nehru's view that Goa had an unique identity might have resulted in Special Status for Goa. Now this Special Status dream is virtually impossible although there are still those jackals who will futilely howl at the moon for it. The book is available at the Art & Culture's book shop in Central Library Panjim and is priced at Rs 395.
