DISCORD OVER "RIVER PRINCESS": Tourism Minister, Mickky Pacheco has
dismissed the appeal field by Salgaocar Mining Industries Pvt Ltd over the
vessel "River Princess" grounded off Candolim-Sinquerim coach. He has
ordered that the Competent Authority while proceeding further under the
Act, should also go into the question whether the Appellant has any
original documents pertaining to the vessel. (H)

GOVT APATHY TOWARDS SAND EXTRACTION: The Anjuna residents have blamed sand
extraction for triggering the collapse of the sea-facing cliff over a
100-metre stretch that now threatens houses and business establishments in
the area. Says one resident, "This is not a natural phenomenon. This is a

SIX TRAWLERS SEIZED: Six trawlers were seized by the Goa Coast Guard
yesterday, after the boats were found venturing into the Arabian Sea for
fishing activities during the prohibited period. (H)

CM TAKES OVER KTC REINS: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has taken over the
reins of the troubled Kadamba Transport Corporation and will now be the

TEMPO INTO A CULVERT: A 22-year-old labourer died on the spot while others
were injured, when a loaded tempo plunged in a 3-metre deep culvert at
Chine Arc at Gulem in Canacona. (H)

TAKING VIEWERS FOR A RIDE: People complain that despite being a service
industry, the cable operators don't respond to complaint calls and most of
them don't have a generator backup. "No only is the transmission bad but
most of the time I switch on the TV to stare at a blank screen," says Ms

CONVICTED FOR RAPE: The Sessions Court yesterday convicted one Govind Pawar
of Collem in Sancorda, for raping a seven-year-old girl at Collem last

URGED NOT TO…: Facing prospects of stagnation in chances of promotion, the
Goa Public Works Department Engineers' Association has urged the chief
minister not to grant extension to any PWD engineer after their retirement
on superannuation. (H)

as expected and party president Shashikala Kakodkar had to adjourn it as
acrimonious scenes continued even after nearly two-and-a-half hours of hot

SAAD FLAYS VICTIMISATION OF NIGERIAN COUPLE: Bailancho Saad has condemned
the harassment meted out to the parents of the four-year-old Nigerian girl
who was raped by Sunil Tamankar from Assagao. The Saad charged the police
of protecting one of its officers who had played dirty and not registered
the rape case and said that both the PI and Tamankar were protected for
petty vote-bank interests. (GT)

MOLESTATION CASES: In eight out of the nine molestation offences against
foreigners, the offender is either acquitted or allowed to go scot-free for
lack of evidence. The ninth is still under investigation. (H)

CERTIFICATE COURSES: Brazilian readership Chair and Department of
Sociology, Goa University, will offer a post graduate certificate course in
Portuguese language and Brazilian culture from 13 August. Email

SANS FOOTPATHS: Thousands of pedestrians put their lives to great risk in
the Margao city everyday sans any footpaths worth its name. On some of the
roads like the Station Road, even an inch of space is not reserved for
pedestrians, who often have a close shave from being hit by the vehicles. (H)

CAMURLIM SARPANCH FACES MUSIC: Sarpanch of Camurlim (Salcette) Basilio
Fernandes was grilled at a Gram Sabha meeting on various issues which
included illegal constructions, drainages, electricity, pre-monsoon works,

LOVERS ATTEMPT SUICIDE: A young boy (Sachin Lad) and a girl (Suvarna
Morodker) from Mumbai attempted suicide yesterday afternoon in a hotel at
Colva by consuming poison. Police said that the two are still unconscious
and their statements are to be recorded. (NT)

TRADE UNION LEADER FETED: The workers under the banner of Zuari Mazdoor
Ekta affiliated to All India Trade Union Congress felicitated Comrade
Christopher Fonseca, the general secretary of AITUC on his 49th birthday at

MAHARASHTRA OWES RS.3 CRORE: Archdiocesan Board of Education, the apex body
of Catholic schools in Mumbai, has alleged that the Maharashtra government
owed about Rs.three crore as "non-salary grants" to their institutions in
the metropolis and criticized political parties for putting pressure on

SUDHIR PHADKE EXPIRES: Doyen of Marathi light music and playback singer
Sudhir Phadke died at a Mumbai hospital on July 29. He was 83, and was
admitted at the Hinduja Hospital after suffering a brain haemorrhage He had
taken active part in the Goa liberation movement. (H)

PROMOTION OF HINTERLAND: "We have an extremely dynamic, young and
enthusiastic Director of Tourism in Suryanarayan, who spares no efforts to
promote Goa as a tourist destination. However, he needs support from
experts in various fields like trekking, hiking, mountaineering, sports

ABOUT NETRAVALI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY: The State government has approached the
Supreme Court in order to partially de-notify the Netravali wildlife
sanctuary while there are no plans to de-notify the Madei wildlife
