GOACOM NEWS CLIPPINGS September 07, 2002 DOUBLE MURDER IN MARGAO: In a gruesome double murder, two persons believed to be naives of Karnataka/Kerala were found killed with their heads smashed with laterite stones, while they were fast asleep below the Margao flyover past midnight. Police strongly believe that the murder could be a result of rivalry amongst gang members, mostly involved in pick-pocketing offences on moving trains. (H)
SEZ FOR GOA: While talking to newspersons yesterday in Panjim, the Union Minister of State for Commerce, Mr Rajiv Pratap Rudy, said that the creation of a Special Economic Zone in Goa is being studied for promoting the export of marine products. He said, "Exports (of seafood from Goa) increased from 412 MTs (Rs.2.39 crore) in the same period of last year, to 2,109 MTs (Rs.6.62 crore) this year. This shows an increase of 412 per cent in quantity terms and 177 per cent in value terms, the highest for any port in India. I have no doubt that Goa will continue go grow in the years to come and become an important centre for the Marine Products Export Development Authority". (NT) ACTION AGAINST ILLEGAL RELIGIOUS CONSTRUCTIONS: Any construction carried out in furtherance of a religious place in a public place sans permission in a municipal area is now liable for action. Following directions issued by the Supreme Court to all the States and Union Territories, the Director of Municipal Administration has written to the civic bodies to comply with the court ruling. (H) NO DEFINITE VISION: "The present Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has no definite vision for developing Goa and also as to what should be the administrative set up for the future of the State…He converted Sanquelim municipality into a village panchayat and now he is proposing to convert Taleigao, which is part of the Panjim municipality, into a panchayat. This clearly shows lack of consistency in his planning for Goa. (Amrut Kansar in Herald) 'HARASSING' SUBSCRIBERS: Star TV, Mumbai, yesterday accused a section of the local cable operators of "harassing" subscribers by switching off Star signals. Star said it was getting paid for only 38,000 subscribers for the whole of Goa, which it claimed has over one-lakh cable and satellite homes. (H) DON'T PANIC: The Mapusa Urban Co-operative Bank (Bank of Goa) authorities yesterday stated that there was no need for panic among the depositors as the bank with the support of the government would resume its normal functions. "Depositors' money is safe and there is no need to withdraw it because of any scare," the authorities added. (GT) SUICIDE IN ASSONORA: A 58-year-old man, Francis Fernandes from Fernandes Vaddo in Assonora, is believed to have committed suicide by consuming poison. The reason for the suicide is un-determined, police said. (H) BODY FOUND: The body of Bento alias Nicholas Fernandes, who drowned off Candolim beach on August 4 while fishing in the vicinity of "mv River Princess", was found at the Sinquerim beach early yesterday morning. (GT) BJP MEN WANT KHALAP ARRESTED: Mandrem constituency BJP Committee has demanded that the former chairman of Mapusa Urban Co-operative Bank Ramakant Khalap be arrested, holding him responsible for the economic scam in the bank headed by him since 1980. The demand was made at a press conference held at Mandrem on Tuesday. (GT) ECO-FRIENDLY TEXT BOOKS: The new Environment Education in School System, a World Bank supported programme implemented by the Ministry of Environment and Forests and a part of the Indian Environment Management Capacity Building project, is now a part and parcel of the curriculum for middle schools in Goa since this academic year. But only 100 middle schools (V-VII Std) have been chosen for the programme in which new text books will be free. (NT) "NATIVITY OF MARY" FEAST: The feast of Our Lady of Nativity will be celebrated on September 8, with the feast mass at 10 am, at the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Monte at Old Goa. The chapel, commanding a picturesque view of the city of Panjim and its surrounding villages, was erected under the order of Afonso de Albuquerque in 1519, nine years after the conquest of Goa.
