DACOITS STRIKE MARGAO: In a daring daylight dacoity, six to seven unmasked 
dacoits armed with countrymade revolvers and knives swooped down on the 
house of businessman, Tajudin Noorani at Aquem in Margao shortly after dawn 
on Friday and looted cash, gold and diamonds worth over Rs.6 lakh. (H)

HANDIWORK OF MUMBAI GANG: Even as a red alert stands issued to nab the 
dacoits, the police believe that the dacoity is the handiwork of a 
professional gang operating in metropolitan cities like Mumbai. Terming the 
incident as linked to the railways, Supdt of Police (South) Shukla said the 
dacoity has given a different dimension to such offences. (H)

four-year-old girl, who was found dead on the terrace of Hospicio hospital

under mysterious circumstances at his bungalow located near the National

CALANGUTE CITIZENS TO HONOUR BRUNO: This year's Arjuna awardee in football, 
Bruno Coutinho, will be felicitated tomorrow by the citizens of Calangute 
at the football ground. The program will kick off with a motorcade to be 
flagged off from Calangute church at 3.30 pm before wending its way through 
the various wards of Calangute, accompanied by live music from a 22-mnember

MADEI: 'IN-PRINCIPLE' NOD IN ABEYANCE: The controversial letter issued by 
the Central Water Commission to the Karnataka government giving them "in 
principle" clearance for diversion of 7.56 TMC of water from the Madei 
basin to Malaprabha, has been kept in abeyance. (H)

TWO HOURS WORK ON OCT 2: Government servants will have to grace their 
offices for two hours on Gandhi Jayanti (October 2), which will also serve 
as the culminating day of a 15-day long cleanliness drive in their

MUCB'S MULTI-STATE STATUS: With the Central Registrar of Co-operative 
Societies unable to intervene directly, the solution to the Mapusa Urban 
Co-operative Bank imbroglio is left to be decided by the general body of

DISPOSAL OF GARBAGE: The Movement of Amity Towards Roads in Goa (MAARG) 
under the banner of war against rubbish (WAR) has organised a session on

PARISH PLAINT: After a gap of three days the parish priest of St Andrew's 
Church in Vasco yesterday filed a complaint with the Vasco police, in 
connection with the vandalism at the church cemetery. (H)

DOGS ELECTROCUTED: Four dogs were feasting on the carcass of a dead bull at 
Suke-Kulan in Dhargal, when a live wire snapped and fell on the dogs, 
electrocuting them on the spot. (H)

ORPHANAGES CONFERENCE: The inaugural ceremony of the two-day conference of 
representatives of orphanages in India will be held today at 9.30 am in the 
precincts of Shree Shantadurga Devasthan Hall at Kavale, Ponda. (GT)

FATAL ACCIDENT: Mr Kushali Naik, a resident of Vasco, died in a fatal 
acceded reported at Sancoale on Thursday. The deceased dashed against an 
electric pole while riding his two-wheeler from Vasco to Verna. (NT)

GOA: PHARMACEUTICAL CAPITAL: While inaugurating a seminar of the 
Association of Pharmaceutical Teachers of India at the Kala Academy 
yesterday, Industries Minister Ramrao Dessai said that in Goa there are 
many pharmaceutical units and efforts are to on to make Goa the 
pharmaceutical capital of India. (H)

CAT SCAN AT HOSPICIO: Hospicio will get the much awaited CAT scan during 
this calendar year even as the Health Ministry has claimed that it has 
sanctioned additional staff to tide over the shortage of personnel at this 
South Goa premier hospital. (H)

GLOBAL BIRD WATCHING SITE AT CARAMBOLIM: After being suffocated by the 
overgrowth of the Salvinia Molesta weed for more than a couple of years, 
the Carambolim lake, an international bird-watching site, has received a 
new lease of life. A farmers' initiative has resulted in purging the unique 
wetland of the troublesome weed, which throttled aquatic life and deprived 
the winter visitors of their feed during their sojourn to escape the cold 
climes back home. (GT)

KNOWING YOUR KHAZAN KHAZANA: My simple and new definition of the khazan 
land from a Goan ecological perspective is: "Low-lying, mangrove-fringed, 
coastal saline lands (mesohaline), drained by the tidal estuaries which 
have been subjected to planned and contour-integrated 
topo-hydro-engineering by the local communities to produce reasonable

GOA'S ANIMAL POPULATION: Though there has been a marginal rise in the 
population of leopards, from 25 to 41, during the last five years in Goan 
jungles, there is a decrease in the number of gaurs, spotted deer, barking 
deer, mouse deer and other animals compared to the last census in 1997.

HELD FOR TRESPASSING: Santan Oliveira and Santan Dias, both from Merces, 
have been arrested by Mapusa police for trespassing into the house of a 
businessman, besides allegedly extorting money from him. (H)

Award has been posthumously conferred on Fr Lourdino Barreto in recognition 
of his creative interpretation of western and classical Indian music... In 
1999, a music school was set up in Fr Lourdino's memory in his hometown of
