COPS GRILL KEY SUSPECT: The Probe into the Tanuja Naik murder case has gained fresh lease of life with the police summoning a key suspect and his kin named by the Action Committee at a public meeting on Sunday. (GT) MANHUNT TO TRACK DOWN KILLERS; Twenty-four hours after the sensational murder that sent shock waves in Cumbharjua, Goa police is yet to track down the killers of Manohar (Murli) Parab, who was found brutally murdered on the Kadamba plateau on Sunday afternoon. (H) ALCOHOL RACKET BUSTED: The Goa police have detected what appears to be a multi-State scam of smuggling of Extra Neutral Alcohol (ENA) for use in distilleries, allegedly being carried on in connivance with Excise department officials. Police discovered that at least 17 tankers, carrying 12,000 litres of ENA each entered the State after using forged import permits. (GT) FATAL ACCIDENT AT BAMBOLIM: Two people diedSubhash Rankale from Mapusa and Shivaji Manzarewhile Vasant Kumar, survived when the Matador pick-up in which they were traveling rammed into a stationery Canter parked in front of the Goa Medical College, Bambolim, on National Highway 17 in the wee hours of the morning yesterday. (NT) GOVT DROPS SANTA CRUZ SPORTS COMPLEX: The State government has decided to drop the proposal of setting up a multipurpose sports complex at St Cruz and is contemplating on shifting the venue to Pernem. Chief Minister Mr Manohar Parrikar said at a press conference yesterday, "There were objections raised by the people from the constituency as well as MLAsVictoria Fernandes, Dayanand Narvekar, Pratapsingh Rane, Jitendra Deshprabhuand the government has therefore decided to drop the idea of having the complex at the proposed site." (H) BENEFITS OF I T POLICY: The Minister for Information Technology, Mr Francisco D'Souza, observed that maximum people in the State should avail benefit of the new IT policy of the Goa government. The policy is drafted with proper planning so that on its implementation, the State goes in right direction and the benefits of the policy are enjoyed by the people at the grassroots level at par with the high class people," D'Souza while delivering the inaugural address at the panel discussion on "Increasing Role of IT in Good Governance". (NT) THALI'S COURT APPEARANCES: The Panjim Bench of the Bombay High Court has directed the additional registrar to make a list of all the appearances made by the Additional Advocate General, Vilas P Thali, in the High Court since his appointment to the post, in the wake of the petition filed by Advocate JP D'Souza challenging the creation of the post of additional advocate general on the grounds that it was not support by Article 165 of the Constitution. (H) COLVALE POWER LINE: The Kolhapur-Colvale power line and the 400 KV substation being erected at a cost of Rs.182 crore is likely to be test-charged on Dussehra (15 October). Power Minister Digambar Kamat claimed that the project would save Rs.40 crore and the commissioning of the line would reduce the power fluctuations in North Goa. (GT) SERAULIM HOUSE-COUNT: In a bid to ascertain the extent of illegal constructions, a physical count of all the houses in Seraulim will be carried by the village panchayat, beginning from October 15. (H) TO DUMP GARBAGE: The Calangute panchayat finally "cleared the obstructions" on the Saligao hill-road leading to its garbage dump with the protection of Calangute police, who were directed to do so by the Bardez Block Development Officer. (GT) DEMISE OF SIOLIM PHOTOGRAPHER ANAND: The people in Siolim will miss a very familiar and wellknown face, with the death of popular photographer Anand Pandarinath Pangam, who expired at his home in Siolim yesterday following a brief illness. He leaves behind his wife Anandi and sons Udesh, Rajesh and Dinesh. For quite a long period the lanky, ever smiling and friendly photographer clicked almost every auspicious occasion celebrated at the homes of Catholics as well as Hindus here. A highly creative artiste, Anand was almost a permanent photographer every time nuptials were held at St Anthony's Church. For several years he also worked at the photo studio of Foto Arte Kamat in Mapusa.
