OFFICIAL STATUS TO MARATHI RESOLUTION: Resolutions demanding official status to Marathi in Goa and to grant more time to Panaji Doordarshan to telecast Marathi programmes were passed unanimously on the concluding day of the 76 th All India Marathi Literary Conference held at Karad, Maharashtra, on January 13. LINEMAN ELECTROCUTED: A lineman, Holibasppa (42), from the Electricity department was electrocuted and another injured as they were working on electric poles near MPT Guest House at Sada, Mormugao, yesterday. (GT)

CLEARED AT POLEM, SEIZED AT MAJALI: Three lorries carrying crates of liquor bottles and coming from Goa were intercepted by sleuths at the Majali checkpost in Karnataka and barely 50 metres from the Polem check-post in Goa. All the vehicles having Tamil Nadu registration had passed through the Polem check-post manned by Goa Excise personnel and police. (H)

AGITATION FOR RIBANDAR PANCHAYAT: The Ribandar Citizens Committee on January 12 launched an agitation for a Ribandar panchayat with a public meeting held at Ribandar Patto. Speakers expressed great concern that Ribandar has been neglected and that the residents were only being burdened with high taxes but no civic amenities. (H)

GRADING PATTERN LIKELY: The Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, with its main aim to improve the quality of learners, has put forward a proposal to introduce grading pattern for students. (Shyam Zambauliker in NT)

DESIGNER'S "PACT" MISUNDERSTOOD: It made it to the headlines across the country, but prominent Goa-based fashion designer Wendell Rodricks is thankful that the Goa press showed restraint while reporting over this contentious event. Rodricks, who formalized his gay relationship with French national Jerome Marrel on December 26, said some journalists had reported on the event "without talking" to him and had even called it a "marriage". Under the French legal system, the law allows for two persons staying together to enter into a 'pact of solidarity'. "This can be entered by any two people, who opt to live together. It could be an elderly lady and a young man who may not prefer to marry or adopt. It applies to heterosexuals or homosexuals," said Rodricks. (H)

RS.200 CR FOR POWER: While commissioning the 220 KV Colvale-Tivim line and 220/110 KV Sub-station at Tivim on January 13, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said Goa will be an ideal state in power within two to three years time. He said, an amount of Rs.200 crore will be spent in the power sector within a year. (GT)

GOA YUVA MAHOTSAV: Chetan Acharya, a young cultural activist from Canacona, has been chosen the working president of the eighth Goa Yuva Mahotsav scheduled at Curchorem on 25 and 26 January this year. (GT)

PHONE DIRECTORIES: It is one centimeter thicker than the last time round, some 240 pages fatter, but many months too late. The Goa Telephone directory of 2002 has recently been released, but is still to reach the hands of the average subscriber in this small State of high teledensity. (Frederick Noronha in Herald)

MISSING MAN FOUND DEAD: Caitan Peixote (45), a resident of Xeldem-Quepem, who was reported missing, was found dead floating in the Xeldem lake. (GT)

4-YEAR-OLD DROWNS: Tragedy struck the Ghelot family at Sukhoband-Seraulim when four-year-old Abishek Ghelot, who was playing outside his house, met a watery rave in a nearby pond on January 12. (H)

CARRASCO'S WAY OUT: The party is over. Mapusa Municipal Council Chairperson Michael Carrasco has very few options and the most honourable one, may be, is to resign. It is now crystal clear that Prakash Bhivshet has either been "lifted" or voluntary changed sides, leaving Carrasco in the lurch…Carrasco may have embarrassed his mentor first, but the Law Minister Francisco D'Souza seems to have the last laugh. FEAST OF BL JOSEPH VAZ: The feast of Blessed Joseph Vaz will be celebrated at Sancoale on January 16. Fr Dennis Pereira, author of the book "Blessed Joseph Vaz, The Man His Mission, His Message" will be the main celebrant at the high mass at 10 am. (GT)

SHIRODA MLA BEREAVED: Ankush S Shirodkar, father of Shiroda MLA Subhash Shirodkar, passed away following a brief illness at his residence t Bhatwada, Shiroda on January 13. He was 82. (GT)

THE CM'S WATERMELON DAYS: "Goa's markets are flooded every year with truckloads of hybrid watermelons from the neighbouring states…Gone are the days of the local watermelon crops. Places like Cansaulim, Majorda, Saligao, Parra and Taleigao were once famous for some of the sweetest, juiciest, olive-green watermelons with reddish pump. WENDY GETS AWARD: Dr Wendy D'Mello of Goa Dental College and Hospital, Bambolim, has been awarded the Dr GC Das Memorial Award, being adjudged the best speaker for her paper presentation at the 30th Indian prosthodentic society conference held at Patna from 30 Nov to 2nd Dec. She presented a paper entitled Gingival retraction cards, their role in tissue displacement. (GT)

BRUNO AMONG "YOUTH AWARD" WINNERS: On the occasion of the National Youth Day, on the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekanand, the Goa Pradesh Youth Congress Committee announced their maiden youth award for 2002. The Youth Award 2002 will be awarded to Bruno Coutinho (international footballer), Chandrakant Kavlekar (youngest MLA, Samir Salgaokar (young industrialist, Devanand Malvankar (TV actor and singer).
