The OpenSceneGraph (http://www.openscenegraph.org) simply uses a password-protected wiki, with a single password that "everybody in the community knows". This may prevent contributions from new users who don't now the password yet, but it is a simple solution that has stopped spam. I don't know if this is a good solution, but it is an alternative that worked for them.
