The thing is one might have non-local users, I think it would be cleaner
with a 'console' group for users with physical access.

I suggest a generic console or a more specific cdrecord group, and
making the device node owned by this group, and with mode 0660. If you
choose 0666 anyway, then you can get rid of the cdrecord group and let
the device be owned by 0.0.
