I think one reason that programs are automatically installed is because if they are to be used more than once, it makes sense to keep them in one logical place. It doesn't make sense to keep everything on (for example) the desktop, as that has potential to become a organizational nightmare, fast. After all, there's not only the application to consider, but the libraries it depends upon as well. Where do those go? To answer one of your questions, while I'm not a developer, I don't believe there is anything like what you suggest in the pipeline.
