I didn't get exactly what failed. Wasn't the behavior of falling back
to the USB flash in the absence of squashfs images in the CD expected?

Try to run StartTask Network after boot. May be a delay issue, in
which the bootscripts tried to bring the net up before eth/udev/etc.
was ready for it.

Is this during the CD boot? At what point?

Change in net behavior tends to confirm it's a delay issue. We may
need to add a loop there to wait until it's ready (which would slow
down boot up to a timeout in non-networked systems... other ideas
welcome).
