I still like the idea of using Makefiles, which would allow one to
define dependencies (list them as prerequisites), select between
alternatives (although I forget exactly how), be fairly backwards
compatible (makefile rules which mainly call StartTask or similar) and
start processes as parallel-ly as possible (make -j).

I've still not made a proof of concept, sadly.  Oh for a free weekend
when I'm not fixing or shifting hardware!
