My thought was simply this:

Such packages are ideal for isolated, standalone apps, or
closely-integrated suites (such as LibreOffice, all of which shares a
single main binary). Using pre-existing, separately-maintained
versions would reduce the maintenance burden on the Gobo team, leaving
them time to focus on the distro itself, and more complex things that
are not easily packaged like this -- such as desktop environments.
