Dead seems a too strong word, in my opinion. ;) GoboLinux is more like Princess Aurora and the seven dwarves - the former just needs a kiss to wake up.
I myself actually wanted to send out some instructions how to use that ruby project that I am using to compile stuff (I even fixed a few show-stoppers), but I got side-tracked with other things which have more priority right now. I did write an initial skeleton though, and stored it as a markdown .md file - eventually I will publish this (after testing it out thoroughly on a vanilla GoboLinux install) but it's hard to predict when that will happen. So I can understand it fairly well when other projects or reallife-related activities keep things on a small fuel. For GoboLinux itself, I think the best would be to be able to transition into a state where people can more easily: a) compile a program from source successfully (no matter how), and have that work and b) install some binary that was already compiled Both a) and b) are a bit cumbersome right now due to various reasons. I myself got frustrated a lot with "non-standard" programs in regards to installation - docbook* related stuff is an example (see the BLFS instructions for that here: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/view/svn/pst/sgml-dtd.html ), but there are more programs that are a bit annoying. Glib-schema files for example; or qt + kde5 plasma. To give an example... okular, the kde PDF viewer, was not working for me despite it compiling successfully. It took me a while until I somehow found out, through google (!), that it requires a certain directory called plugin/ - and if it can not find it, it will send out very useless error messages that do not help quite a lot. :\ :/ I compiled most of KDE5 plasma successfully here and I can even start kde5 although the bottom panel is missing (which makes this quite annoying), but other than that, windows/widgets appear just fine. No clue how to resolve this and I am notoriously lazy - I kind of wait until this problem resolves itself on its "own". Actually that surprisingly works quite well - I am using mate-desktop right now, for example, all compiled from source. (The ruby project I use was sort of inspired by GoboLinux, since I am too stupid to understand shell scripts in general. In my opinion, lack of information is an area where open source could improve the most, e. g. by providing more documentation in general - I don't mean this just in regards to GoboLinux, but really more general. See the LFS/BLFS project - it really collects a LOT of useful information and you can follow updates here: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/view/cvs/introduction/changelog.html ) Anyway to your question: - I think the GoboLinux philosophy should work fine on the BSD* flavours. I may be wrong but I think that was one idea of ... goboroot was it? The one where you can compile things relative to e. g. your home directory or another prefix, so that should work on the BSDs too. Not sure if anyone has tried it. The gobo kernel patch may in principle also work on BSD but I have no knowledge how the BSD kernels work (nor that I have any real experience in regards to the linux kernel, but I did compile the linux kernel from source successfully several times). In my opinion the flexibility that linux has is actually the primary reason why it is "better" than BSD. But there should be no net-difference for when you wish to get a GoboLinux layout on the BSDs. From experience, though, for about 20 linux users at best there will be 1 BSD user ... :\ I used to tinker with some BSDs too, in particular the old PC-BSD (now has some other name which I keep on forgetting). It also had a vaguely similar approach to "app-dirs" ... but I am not sure how far it progressed. Actually the biggest blocker IMO is, aside from lack of time, knowledge how things fit together. But I am pretty confident that the mate-desktop can work on GoboLinux quite fine; in fact, I have most of it under /Programs/ here, although I am using a modified slackware as base. (The only thing confusing me is how glib-schema files work ... which is also a bit annoying ... and when you don't have that knowledge, you are kind of semi-stuck ...)
