I had this problem also. I'm running Debian Etch 32-bit and installed REE 20090421 from source and god wouldn't start up. When started with -D it just opened the drb port then that was it...didn't do anything else, but didn't die either. When I started it normally it just immediately died.
When I went back to REE 20090201 it works fine again.
