Actually, you DO need to use an API key to get the fully functional Maps API. If you don't include it, you will be able to get imagery, but you will (a) always get the warning about the key being registered for another site and (b) not be able to use all overlays or controls (e.g., I can show a marker, but not the map type control or small map control). Don't ask me to explain it. I haven't even tried.
