You can do what you're wanting, but you're going to have to override
the GSvideoSearchControl.prototype.firstSearch method to get it done.

Specifically, you need to include the following code AFTER you load
gsvideosearch.js and BEFORE you initialize your GSvideoSearchControl:

GSvideoSearchControl.prototype.firstSearch = function(){
  if(this.searchCounter==0){this.searchByIndex(0);}
}

This will run the search for the first tag in your defaultTags array.
If you want to run it for another tag in the array, just change the 0
accordingly.

Also, regarding your load speeds, there are a number of ways that you
could improve performance. I would recommend using Mozilla Firefox
with the Firebug and YSlow add-ons installed. YSlow is a Firebug
plugin that will help you analyze and improve the performance of
various components of your site. It's simple to use, grading site
performance in 13 categories on a simple A, B, C, D, F scale, where A
is good and F is fail. Once you get into the habit of utilizing it,
Firebug and YSlow really are indispensible.
