You can build your own mashup which would combine the features you like from both the LocalSearch control and the GSmapSearchControl. You'll want to keep the class reference handy, and you can tinker in the API Playground. In addition to a basic understanding of Javascript, you'll be able to glean all of the essential principles that you'll need from those sources.
