Ok figured out the problem. The javascript code here
http://www.google.com/uds/solutions/blogbar/gsblogbar.js?mode=new

assigns GSblogBar.DEFAULT_QUERY = "Google";

So the solution is to download the code (licensed under Apache) and
change the DEFAULT_QUERY to ""
