Hi Ryan, I can see how this is a little confusing, so let me try to clarify.
AdSense can currently be used with two of our API products: Custom Search Control (http://code.google.com/apis/ajaxsearch/ documentation/customsearch/index.html) Local Search Control (http://code.google.com/apis/ajaxsearch/ documentation/localsearch/index.html) The easiest way to get Custom Search set up on your website is through the Custom Search Element: http://www.google.com/webelements/customsearch/ Since the Custom Search Control extends the Search Control (http:// code.google.com/apis/ajaxsearch/documentation/ reference.html#_intro_GSearchControl), you can create similar custom code to help the control match your site's look and feel. In fact, we recently did a blog post detailing some of the ways to customize: http://googleajaxsearchapi.blogspot.com/2009/08/custom-search-with-custom-style-peanut.html However, the (non-custom) Search Control itself does not currently support AdSense ads. If this changes in the future, the Issue Tracker item you quoted will be updated accordingly. In the mean time, if you want to use AdSense with search on your page, Custom Search is the way to go.
