The word captcha is something a bit different from the api usually (in my experience) and is usually triggered by Googles Network Security DDOS protection so I would wonder what you doing that would trigger it as its kinda hard to get that under normal circumstances (don't read as pointing fingers, not what I'm saying ;)). I had it once but it was being caused by a bug in Firefox (about:config caching setting) and I was discussing it with Googles Network Security team to isolate the issue.
Usually, for this api though, if you supply your API key or in the case of server side requests still use an API key (when possible) and a valid HTTP Referrer and now a client userip param as this will help them determine legit requests from automated ones and also provide them with a way to contact you before blocking your IP/Server or app. Usually in general use the most common case of something like this (with blocking requests) would be triggered from a bit of code that needs fixing like when iterating through a loop where it fires off events in rapid succession. For most cases though I would not really worry about it, if it does become an issue then you can follow up here and the team will try to investigate for you, as long as your TOS compliant they don't want legit apps to get affected. You can also (like I mentioned) provide a Oops link and try again even potentially log any non 200 status codes and review your log files for problems and then help the team to compare with their log files to see what the trigger is.
