Yes, you can use the API from a desktop application. You just have to pay 
particular attention to the requirement for a valid HTTP_REFERER header. 
Generally, I recommend setting up a webpage somewhere that will provide a brief 
description of the application and a way to contact you. You can also use this 
page to generate an API key if you decide to use one.
