Unfortunately, this is a known problem with the API. Using site: or other advanced search operators will almost always produce a very limited result set. Fortunately, there is a workaround: if you set up a Custom Search Engine (CSE) that is restricted to your site, you can then link your AJAX API implementation to that CSE and get results as expected.
