The API offers a number of different ways that you can interact with it so that 
you can be sure that the search results will fit into your UI. In general, it 
is NOT against the TOS to adjust the way the result appears to fit in with your 
layout, color scheme, interface, etc. The TOS do, however, prohibit you 
changing the content of the result (e.g., altering the url or the snippet, 
etc.).

That said, whether or not your implementation is consistent with the TOS is 
impossible to say without more details of what you're trying to do. Similarly, 
it's impossible to provide tips on realizing your custom interface without some 
idea of (a) what you're trying to do and (b) what you've done so far.
