After a bit more digging I came across the post

http://groups.google.com/group/google-ajax-search-api/browse_thread/thread/88c2acd7f4446967/8be2d66b8ac99ad8?lnk=gst&q=referrer#8be2d66b8ac99ad8

If I am building a native iPhone app should I setup a landing page and
use that as my http referrer so that if google need to figure out who
is connecting to the service they will be able to visit my landing
page explaining the use of the api? I already have a website so this
is not a problem.

Cheers
