You have to touch child field while the parent is still managed by
PersistenceManager, before detaching (pm.close).
Something like:
PersistenceManager pm = PMF.get().getPersistenceManager();
try {
Employee e = pm.getObjectById(Employee.class, id);
ContactInfo i = e.getContactInfo();
return e;
} finally {
pm.close();
}
