Can you post your full stack trace? Does this error get generated with the makePersistent call or some other call?
Your sample looks relatively straightforward aside from your employee instance's masterData field -- since you're setting up an owned relationship with the data field, why do you need a separate unowned relationship to the MasterData kind?
