If your one-to-many relationship involves two different entity classes
(as it probably does) then please ignore my earlier posting.

You might want to create a dummy or "None" group, to be the parent of
all students that have no group. Of course, one cannot change any
student's parent later since entity group parents are set at creation-
and-first-persistence-time only! You could create a new copy of the
student later with an updated group parent and persist that.
