have you tried

  @PrimaryKey
  @Persistent
  private String key;

?

Since I use keys as encoded strings (instead of unencoded string
keys), I personally use

  @PrimaryKey
  @Persistent(valueStrategy = IdGeneratorStrategy.IDENTITY)
  @Extension(vendorName="datanucleus", key="gae.encoded-pk",
value="true")
  private String sEncodedKey;
